Hi All

Long time reader first time poster.

My 03 D22 ZD30 failed to start today. Has been running fine with no probs. Stopped in at the local shopping centre on the way home from work and she wouldn't start 15 minutes later.

The engine warning light is flashing with ignition on. Glow plug light comes on then goes off as normal. Cranks over as normal and starts for one second then stops. Even with the heat switch on it starts for one second at higher revs then stops. The primer pump was replaced a year ago and goes hard after two pumps.

Everything else seems normal but she just won't fire up and keep running. I filled up with Vortex diesel last Friday and have 3/4 tank left.

any ideas??

Regards,
Steve

Fuel filter mate, I had the same issue in my d40.. I hope it is the filter and not your fuel pump.. Good luck and keep us posted.

I just retrieved it from the woolies car park. I found that with a bit of throttle it will rev very erraticly, not freely, and then cutout after about 20 seconds. I'll change the filter in the morning and hope its not the fuel pump

Cheers

Looks like the pump is the culprit. Is this something a mechanically minded person can do or is it strictly for the pros? And where is the best place to source a new or reco unit?

Ahh shot sorry to hear that bud... Hrmm I do believe that in the yd25 the pump is part of the engine and connected to the timing chain... Very costly and pump costs a small fortune... Not sure about the zd30 tho maybe one of the guys that know more about those engines could help you more then me in that respect. But if its the same principal as the yd25 then I would suggest trying to find a second hand pump and getting someone to fit it..

The spill gate in the ZD30 fuel pumps are known to fail and can't be repaired meaning a new pump is required, around $3-4000 new.The fault could be something else so i'd get a second opinion from someone that knows Nissans well ( NOT a dealer ). Look in the yellow pages for a fuel injection specialist.

Why are the fuel pumps so expensive? Is it more labour charges or what? :/

If two ain't spinnin' you just ain't winnin'

i just had a look through the service manual i have here for the d22 to see if i could find an exploded diagram of how the injector pump works, but the north american one only has petrol models in it, mind you the vg33 in america had a supercharger on it...

anyway, back on topic, they are so expensive because of what they are. that is what controls fuel injection into the motor. instead of a fuel rail like petrol or common rail diesel motors with electronically controlled injectors, direct or indirect injection diesel engines have an injector pump. this usually has a lift pump built into it which sucks the diesel up from the tank and feeds it into the pump. inside the pump are ports, one for each injector. as the motor turns over a shaft inside the pump turns to let fuel to each injector in order.

these pumps also have electronics on them to control timing advance among other things, so they're not cheap.

that's a very basic run down of how they work, this picture should help although the writing isn't in english, lol

Download the workshop manual ( theres a sticky for it ) open SM1E-1D22FG1 ,go to ec (engine control) then go down to page 768 or so and start reading. There's no breakdown image of the pump but it lists fault codes and how to read them. Thgere's a code for spill valve and one for injection timing. Confusing so it might be easier to get a workshop to read it.

Could also be faulty engine shutdown solenoid. Get someone to watch the shutdown valve on the intake manifold where it divides in to 2 and see if it closes as you start the engine.
