Recently purchased a 2009 D22 ST-R with a YD25 in it

Car has 46,000 k's on it

To me, this car has a weird sound that seems to be coming from the front of the engine.

It is a whining noise.

Its very noticeable when warm/hot and over 1500rpm.

2 Nissan dealers are saying this is how a YD25 sounds.

These dealers took the front belts off but couldn't locate the cause of the sound.

below is the YouTube link

Any information would be much appreciated.

Have you replaced the belts? If not try that first. $60 and simple to do.

I have a similar noise in mine but im pretty sure its the turbo, i cant hear mine until the turbo kicks in. mine sounds fairly normal to me and i have 150k on mine, its a 08 D22.
Iv had belts at home for months just been to lazy to get under and chaneg them all over.

Thanks Mitch.

yeah it does not sound normal to me, what belts did you replace?

OneMofo.....it is definitely not the turbo making this sound.

Doesn't sound at all normal to me. But then I don't actually have speakers installed in my work computer, so.....

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Sorry mate, I will check tonight when I get home though, and if I can think of anything USEFUL will post it for you.

Out of interest, what oil is it running, when was it last changed, and what is the oil level like?

I thought it sounded like a chain going fast over a tensioner, but it could equally be an idler pulley bearing, alternator bearing - the fuel pump is down there, but I wouldn't expect that noise from it - perhaps the radiator coupling. Go out and turn the cooling fan by hand, is it very smooth or does it feel gritty?

Don't remember my last D22 (had a YD25) sounding like that, swear I can hear chain noise.

what oil are you using? was that a cold startup?

I changed all four mate. 2xdrive/alternator belts, 1 a/c and 1 power steering pump.

Honestly try it. Mine sounded like bearing when warm and chain slap when cold at high idle. Changed the belts and all good now. Highly suggest it!

When its cold its not too noticeable compared to when it is warm/hot

I am not sure what oil it is running, just bought the car 1 month ago

2 Nissan dealers are saying its a normal noise...:-/

It is going in for the 40,000k service tomorrow.

I went to a car yard and listened to a new one, doesn't really sound like it

Could it have something to do with the turbo or boost leak?

Boost leak won't be noticeable @ idle, no real boost being produced (you'd hope, anyway). At high idle a LITTLE boost will be there but if there was that much boost leaking to create that much noise at high idle, you'd have a gutless car on the road. Boost leaks usually sound like high-pitched squeals.

If you're concerned about the turbo, remove the air intake from the front of it and give ti a spin. It should be very smooth and should not have too much resistance. The shaft shouldn't wobble much (I think the tolerance is 0.09mm). If the turbo is gritty to turn, it could very well be the source of the trouble, but you ought to hear that when driving too. Don't drive too far with a damaged turbocharger, and make sure you let the turbo cool before turning off the engine.

Yes I have. As I said mine was belts. Got gradually worse and worse to like I said above with the bad noises. It cost me $60 and it was simple to fix.

Cheers Mitch

I will definitely try the belts, fingers crossed that works

i just wonder why this wasn't picked up by the 2 nissan Dealers when it went into them to fix this, unless they were just trying to get rid of me

Do you have a video of how Navara sounded before and after?
