Toyota recalls 1.5 mln cars over brake fault
By Patrice Novotny (AFP) – 3 hours ago

TOKYO — Toyota on Thursday announced a safety recall of about 1.5 million vehicles worldwide to fix a brake fluid leak that it warned can gradually diminish braking performance in the cars.

The world's largest auto maker, which was battered by a global safety crisis earlier this year, said it would voluntarily recall 740,000 cars in the United States and almost 600,000 in Japan to fix the problem.

It was also recalling 50,000 autos in Europe, 60,000 in China, 30,000 in Australia and 50,000 in other Asian nations, said a Toyota spokesman in Japan.

He said that no accidents had been linked to the defect.

Toyota is recalling the cars to repair a flaw in which "a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder", which would lead the brake warning lamp to illuminate, the company said.

If at this point the brake fluid is not replaced, "the driver will begin to notice a spongy or soft brake pedal feel and braking performance may gradually decline," Toyota USA said in a statement.

The autos affected are the 2005-2006 models of the Avalon, the 2004 through 2006 non-hybrid models of the Highlander, the Lexus RX330, and the 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250 and IS350 vehicles, Toyota USA said in a statement.

US owners of affected vehicles will be notified by early November, it said.

In Japan, Toyota announced it would recall more than 600,000 cars spanning 13 models, including the Crown, Mark X, Lexus IS and GS, according to filings submitted with the transport ministry.

While in 11 of the models Toyota will fix defects in fuel pump wires and brake master cylinders, the total also includes more than 1,800 units of its Voxy and Noah models affected by a speedometer defect.

The latest moves by the auto giant come after a series of mass recalls of around 10 million vehicles worldwide announced in late 2009 and early 2010 undermined Toyota's once stellar reputation.

It led to US congressional investigations and a record 16.4 million dollar fine to settle claims it hid gas pedal defects blamed for dozens of deaths.

Since then Toyota has seen its US market share shrink by 1.4 points to 15.2 percent for the first nine months of this year.

Toyota said earlier this month it had completed more than five million repairs on US vehicles affected by the series of recalls.

Toyota said some 80 percent of the 2.3 million US vehicles affected by the "sticky pedal" defect had been repaired while 86 percent of the 148,000 Prius and Lexus vehicles recalled for braking problems had also been fixed.

Despite its woes Toyota, a global leader in green car technology, said last week that its Prius petrol-electric hybrid, launched in 1997, had topped the two million sales mark by the end of September.

Its popularity has continued despite Toyota last year recalling 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles to repair a flaw in the braking system.

well dave that doesn't sound nearly as good now does it? should have just let every one believe it was the hilux. then they'd all buy a navara and soon there would loads of spares and extras available for our model

Recalls are nothing and mean bugger all when it comes to buying cars. Even Ferrari had recalls this year and theirs was because the cars caught fire. I'm not sure if I want my car to catch fire or fail to stop but either way I'd be happy they recalled if they considered it a problem. The only downside of recalls is when they take the Nissan approach and do a half arsed job like they did with the bonnet recall.

Thats the main reason I bought the D22 over the D40, the D22 has been out for years and the bugs have been ironed out.

Shero, I ain't a Yota fan by any means. I dont like Landcruisers or Hiluxes.

hahahaha you're all very funny but will we all get back to the crapness of toyota?

if you want to bag out nissan out then go to the toyota forum!!!

Thats a ballsy statement Dave, ironing out bugs is all good and well but manufacturers aren't just recalling new cars, some car recalls date back several years because there are so many parts shared between models. D22's might be lucky today but theres no guarantee that just because they have been around a while they wont ever get a recall, it only takes one bolt to move.

I seem to remember quite a number of complaints about rear diffs that effected D22's, it never ended up in a recall but how many motoring experts were calling for Nissan to stand up and make it one. Picking on Toyotas is one thing but who's going to look the fool if a D22 gets recalled at some stage, not the Toyota driver, but rest assured us D40 drivers will guide you tough D22 drivers through the process since it's so foreign to you all.

Na I get what your saying, well done to Toyota for taking responsibilty.

The rear diff in the D22 that was faulty was the C200K which is a Thai built diff.

I agree with you, Nissan should take more responsibility about the vehicles they sell.

Early GU ZD30's come to mind, they had a tendency to blow pistons. When the engine stops the brakes dont work to well. There is a perfect safety issue.

Nah Actually Dave I was saying don't get too cocky one day you might get a recall and there may be laughter (not from me of course I wouldn't do that just to point out your mistake). It's Murphy's law (one of many and the bastard should be shot), Open you mouth today and bag someone else out and tomorrow sit happily munching on your foot.

So one day when your heading back to Nissan and I ask "Would you like sauce with that?" you'll know to what I refer :eviltongue:

Well I hope I dont, I wont be seeing the local dealer, I want nothing to do with them ever again because of the service manager. Absolute !@#$ wit.

Dave.

I had the same problem. Didn't buy the car from the local guy because he was a DH but when it came to the recall my choice was driving an hour either direction and having nothing to do while they did the work or driving 10 mins and let them drive me home. I was fairly sure all I was going to get was a sticker so I figured they couldn't stuff that up. However they proved how stupid they were when the replaced the whole steering wheel under warranty for the peeling paint on the plastic. Any normal dealer would have just replaced the plastic.
