And I forgot,
we also had the Alternator pully come flying off and run around the engine bay at about 60kph.

which was interesting

This also destroyed the alternator's shalf, result new alternator, under warrantry and a tow truck ride.

Good morning
A follow up
to the lastest problem.

the gear box, cannot select reverse gear sometimes.
which 'I can tell you' caused a problem like you never dreamed of !!!!!!!!!

The sad tale.
Took the truck back to Nissan, the dealer.
explained the problem.

they had a test drive, couldn't find any problem.

phoned me,
I explained the problem AGAIN, to another person, as he hadn't been told
(but thinking how the hell did you know what you were looking for in the first place, if he didn't know the problem ?)

Another phone call from nissan
nothing wrong, we test drove the truck
AND......... (ITS A NEW WAY TO CHECK GEAR BOXES, to me )
we changed the box oil, and no metal can out,
the gear box is ok.

I explained again, once more to the service manager/rep or what ever.
and as a result, he had the truck for two days of personal use.

he drove roughly 40ks to work and home over the two days.
(most people drive in forward gears when they travel any distance, so what did that prove ? )
result,
nothing wrong with the gear box.

thats nice, we have the truck back again
and every now and again..trouble.

Last Saturday, with out thinking the truck was parked, where reverse was required to get out from.

big mistake,
as it took, one song on the CD player plus a bit extra time, to find reverse gear.

NOW
please, any ideas or suggestions please.
As it would appear nissan ................ arrr, this is hopless !

kind regards
UB

Barry, it might help Nissan if you could determine what pattern is required to make reverse unavailable.

Example:

"Parking on an incline, placing it in first gear, turning off the motor and letting the car roll back to take up the compression of the motor..."

or

"On a really hot day, driving the vehicle hard with some load in it, after parking it in the shade..."

The first might be due to something not aligned perfectly in the gearbox. The second (obviously) might be due to heat problems. If you could replicate the conditions, then they'd have an easier time spotting the problem.

The dealer is probably reluctant to change anything without being able to identify the problem because Nissan won't cough up the $ to reimburse them. If you figure out what conditions the problem are caused by, they can see it, then they'll fix it.

The sales manager may not drive the same way as you, and might have been extra gentle (since it's not his car!).

Good luck with it!

I was thinking this when i started reading these forums too and the US forum is even worse they have a list of troubles three times the size. The way I see it is that even with 2000 members (whatever it is I didn't check) this forum is still a small number of those Nav's actually on the road. You take a risk buying any car and some people do get lemons but really even the number on here that have had warranty work done shouldn't be that scary. All forums would be the same

Now it's all coming together. You talk about getting away and towing a caravan and going to all these different places as if it were trekking or holidaying but you are in fact part of the circus side show that's why you know about snake charming stickers and are now offering free bears. You aren't the bearded lady are you?

Back again.

I've explained and now sick of telling nissan the problem

AND how it happens.
don't matter, if the truck has just started or run for 20 minutes.
on the flat, bonnet down hill or uphill.

And 4 people who have tried the truck have also had the SAME PROBLEM.

You cannot select reverse gear.
the lever will not go across to reverse.

Phone nissan again,
after talking to a couple of gear box specialists, this morning.

they stated, they wouldn't know till the box was opened.
one of these fellows also coudn't find reverse gear.

We have owned this bomb for 3 1/2 years and I think by now would understand how to drive the thing, surely.

AND NOW THE BEST PART
we have extended time warrentry papers.

we must accept full responciably and PAY all costs.
to have the box looked at and or fixed.

if there is a problem found
errr, thats right, if

then nissan will decide if they will pay for it.

ok,
lesson learnt,
nissan extra warrentry, is a joke !
and there will be no next time for us.

feel ripped off, you better beleive it.

just sounds like the gear lever isn't going down far enough to open up the reverse gate, take the shifter out and see if there is any adjustment.

wow, was gonna post about the brake tubing rattling againgst the firewall under accelleration and the a/c grinding when switched to demist but it sounds quite petty in comparison

Good morning KingCab
Many thanks for your suggestion, we will look down that avenue.

We decided, not to go back to nissan, for the gear box problem,
and forget the so called warrentry, where the customer pays and then after, nissan decides if it will pay.

to risky for us

and go diretly to a gear box specialist instead.

Kind regards
Barry

My vehicle seems to have th clutch master cylinder rattle - the one that seems to be caused by the check valve in the master cylinder. I'm referring to it as "my 5th gear friend" as that is when it is most apparent.

I haven't had any warranty work performed, and am not overly concerned about the clutch master cylinder rattle at this stage. That being said, I will definitey be remaining vigilant during the remainder of the warranty period to see if anything pops up that needs to be remedied. As I perform all my own maintenance and scheduled servicing, I am in a fortunate position - as it's my vehicle, it's obviously in my interests to spend the time conducting thorough inspections under the vehicle, checking things which a mechanic being paid to perform a regular service would not normally check.

My D40 has that same rattle under acceleration. Been there since new. Nissan told me it was the anti knock or something along those lines??? Looks like something else I will have to get looked at when I get my car back. My car has been at Nissan now for 4 days for warranty work. Only 4000 kms to go until its out of warranty.

fark... and I thought Nissan was supposed to be reliable... sounds like the D22s/40s have nothing but trouble!

While there might be a few problems with some....my personal experience has been all positive. Had a torque convertor problem at 1500km that was fixed within 2 days and nothing problematic since. Great dealer who knows the meaning of customer service and practices it. I also think a lot of the problems are mole hills turned into mountains by many people who are expecting a sedan performance from what is essentially a bloody truck.....
