Auto trans RE4 fault help please

Hi doing an engine swap, on fitting engine i found i had 2.7mm gap for the torque converter to slide forward against the flexplate. Info i could find said at least 3mm, I decided 2.7 was close enough. Started engine moved forwards and back in the shed a few times, all ok. Then with eng. not running i noticed as soon as i moved the throttle on the floor [ TPS not cable ] there was a buzzing noise for a few seconds. At first i thought it was coming from engine bay but it seems to come from transmission. Strange. Then i started the engine and found there was no drive in D or R ,, also when i went to go back to park , it would not go into park as though you were trying to engage gears on a manual without using the clutch. It's possible that with the reduced gap, the pump in the gearbox isn't able to work. This will pretty much stop things from happening.
