Morning all,

After reading up a bit on replacement turbos I'm tossing up between getting a new OEM turbo or a forefront industries replacement.

Does anyone have any experience with a forefront to suit a ZD30 in an 06 d22?

old bus has got 400k on it and is leaking a little bit of oil (which it has done for about 150 000km) around the turbo so its probably time for a birthday.

other than changing the rear diff for another out of a donor nav Ive got stashed in the back paddock everything else is original.

do you have any specialists up north that can re furbish your turbo as this could save you a few bucks. i have heard the Forefront Turbo is pretty good.
 
There is in Cairns but I was thinking that maybe after 400k a new one might be in order?

Not a great deal of complexity to them. You can change the core if your housing is OK. I have heard the forefront ones are OK, but someone on this forum had one on his d40 and it didn't last very long from memory. Make of that what you will.
 
I read on this forum that the forefront unit is a chinese aftermarket

Id be looking for japanese turbo parts like IHI, Mitsubishi turbo,
or garrett
 
what sort of rough price would one be looking at for an overhaul vs new unit?

Ive got another navara same year down the paddock with a reasonable looking turbo on it but it went for a drink so im not sure if its worth the risk fitting it to my ute.

If i had an inter cooler I would be less concerned because id have that to catch the rubbish if the hairdrier lets go.

might be cheaper in the long run to have a look on ebay and crab a used zd-30 turbo that has low k,s [ if possible ] your engine with 400k,s is getting to the end of its life so go easy on the bucks now.
 
was thinking as much mate. still got plenty of go left, just got home with the car trailer and a 1800kg tractor on the back for 100km and up the range. 2.6t all up and she handled it well.

was considering getting a lowish KM engine and putting it on the stand and rebuilding a replacement slowly slowly so when it does finally go I have a replacement sitting on a pallet
 
that would be a great idea to have a spare donk ready to fit as they sure are a great engine, worth the money spent.
 
G'day Cranvel....seems like you're pretty fond of your bus and want to keep it for as long as you can...that's great. I can sometimes see a small drop of oil on my turbo every now and then but nothing that drops on the garage floor even after a week or 2. I just did an inlet manifold complete clean and new oil and put a catch can on it ....pretty happy with the result and increased power is obvious immediately. I hope mine is still going @ 400 000....now its on 250 000. It's been a good car.
 
The guy I had my turbo rebuilt by, said anything less than a grand for a new turbo will just be cheap Chinese junk.

Depending on what you want to do with your old turbo, repair or repair and upgrade, you would be looking in the $800-1500 range. I had a 2nd hand turbo rebuilt and upgraded with billet wheels for $1100.

Hi Jacko.

I only recently fitted a Forefront turbo on our 2004 ZD30 and so far, I can't fault it.
Definitely more responsive down low as they advertise and for $800, I really think you can't go wrong.

Just my opinion though mate.

I run my Forefront at 21 psi and haven't blown it up - he doesn't recommend that much boost. Done 50 000 km.
 
Hey Rumpig,
I have mine set at 18.
Don't the ZD30's have a boost over pressure limit, or do you think I could get away with a little more?

Ecu cuts the fuelling above 18 psi till you back off and get on it again.
