can you turn the rear drum by hand ? is there any screws on the outer drum face that need to be removed ? if alls good try spraying the wheel studs with some wd-40 or such and leave sit for a few minutes to penitrate then hit the side of the drum with a good block hammer a few times and the drum should losen off the stud / axle and pop out. you may need to insert a large screwdriver to the drum to backing plate and apply abit of pressure when you hit with the hammer.

If you only needed to replace the wheel cylinders, at which stage would you do this? Do you need to remove the shoes or can you get the wheel cylinder in/out with them in place still?

Pretty sure you'd have to have the pads out, they're pretty simple once you've got it apart.

you can replace the wheel cylinders with the brake shoes still on , just remove the center spring clip so the shoes can be pulled open more. the center spring clip is positioned approx half way up or down the brake shoe, its a pin with a spring and locking washer thingy holding it together.
